This year, I was once again invited to play a few of my songs at a friend’s garden party in Cologne.
Some of the guests already knew what was in store for them and were really looking forward to it. It seems I’ve already got a small fan club there.
Others didn’t know and were completely blown away.
Technically, it was another very nerve-wracking experience. Overtaken by the malfunction of the RosenLichtKlavier, I had to switch to other songs at the last minute.
And actually, I’d planned a few more premieres and experiments, but the changeable weather meant they couldn’t go ahead. The system wasn’t running quite smoothly either, so everything was still up in the air right up until five minutes before the performance.
Well, there’s nothing for it. Just close your eyes and improvise somehow. That’s what live concerts are all about, after all.
But it all worked out brilliantly in the end, and the sound was much better this time than at the last garden party. The hostess’s good old hi-fi speakers from the 80s still pack a punch today.
After the concert, I had a few great chats. An exciting mix of “that was brilliant again”, “I really wasn’t expecting that” and “how does that actually work?”.
It was quite a slog, but it was also good practice for the next really exciting concert at the Kulttempel in Oberhausen.
